Studies show that women are more likely to have varicose veins. According to one research, women are four times more vulnerable to varicose veins than men. Researchers say that 50% of American women experience varicose veins and other vein-related issues at some stage of their life.

You must be wondering why women are more susceptible to developing these vein conditions? Let’s have a look at some of the reasons.

Reasons for Varicose Veins in Women

The primary reasons for varicosity in women are often linked to pregnancy and hormones.

  • Pregnancy

The blood volume doubles to supply your baby with oxygen and nutrients required for growth and development. The increased blood volume can stress your blood vessels and end up swelling your veins. Moreover, the additional weight you carry in your belly can also cause stress to your veins. These are the major factors that cause valve destruction.

  • Hormones

Female hormones (estrogen and progesterone) play an important role in fertility and menstruation. These hormones may also be responsible for why women are more likely to develop varicose veins than men. These hormones control the blood movement in your veins which helps in vein relaxation. This relaxation may affect blood flow and lead to blood assembling.

In addition, you may also be at risk of developing varicose veins if it runs in your family or if you spend too much time on your feet, or even obesity can cause venosity.

Some ways estrogen and progesterone can cause varicose veins:

  • Estrogen

Increasing the amount of estrogen in the body may negatively impact veins twice. It may cause concerns with the walls of veins and reduce the labor capacity for the valves inside the veins. When the veins and valves are compromised, varicose veins may develop.

  • Progesterone

Saphenous veins are more sensitive to producing an imbalance in the progesterone level. As progesterone levels fluctuate, damage can occur. Weakened vessel walls can’t handle increased blood pressure. With increased pressure, the vein can become dilated and unable to transfer blood efficiently. These veins may become enlarged and twisted as they overfill with blood, resulting in varicose veins.

Causes of Varicose Veins in Women

There are several causes of varicose veins. Varicose veins can be caused by:

  • Weak or damaged valves
  • The walls of the vein become stretched and less flexible or elastic, and the valves may get weaker
  • The farthest veins from the heart are not strong enough for blood flow

Also, any condition that puts pressure on the abdomen can cause varicose veins:

  • Pregnancy
  • Constipation
  • Tumors (in rare cases)

Risk Factors of Varicose Veins

Some potential risk factors include:

  • Going through menopause
  • Being over the age of 50
  • Being pregnant
  • Standing for long periods of time
  • Obesity
  • Having a family history of varicose veins
  • Being inactive
  • Taking oral contraceptive pills or hormone replacement

Treating and Preventing Varicose Veins

There are several measures you can take to prevent varicose veins, including:

  • Avoid standing for extended periods of time
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Exercise to improve your blood circulation
  • Use compression socks or stockings
  • Leg elevation
